What do you think is one of the most outstanding qualities of a
wild forest?

Though there are many outstanding values of wild forests –
wildlife habitat, natural beauty, solitude and silence – I
believe that the single greatest thing about a wild forest is
its clean water. Our wild forests are our watersheds: they
capture, purify and store water unlike any other ecosystem.

The Science of Denial

The Bush administration has worked overtime to manipulate or
conceal scientific evidence-and muzzled at least one prominent
scientist-to justify its failure to address climate change.

Its motives were transparent: the less people understood about
the causes and consequences of global warming, the less they
were likely to demand action from their leaders. And its strategy
has been far too successful. Seven years later, Congress is only
beginning to confront the challenge of global warming.

Brazil says dozens of tribes live in the region

Authorities in Peru are to take measures to protect some of the last indigenous tribes to have avoided contact with the outside world.

They have promised to stop loggers encroaching on their land near the Brazilian border.

The announcement comes after photographs of an isolated tribe taken near the border with Peru were circulated around the world.

Researchers are finding the rate of increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is rising and methane is on the increase too, raising growing concerns about the environmental impacts and efforts to cut emissions. Nigel Williams reports.

Atmospheric carbon dioxide at record high

The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached a record level-increasing by 0.6 per cent last year alone-and methane levels are rising for the first time in a decade according to new results, renewing fears about global climate change prospects.
